Traveler, are you thirsty?
Rijhang (water table) |
Today I am going uncle's house. Uncle's village is small. The name of the village is Animrong Para. It is located in Rajasthali Upazila of Rangamati district. There is no electricity in the village, about 5 km from the market, hospital, college. There are about 60 families in the village. There is a Buddhist monastery and primary school. 98 percent of the people here are farmers. The people here are very simple. Hundreds of years ago, the village has not changed much. The first graduate woman in the village is my cousin. She is now studying a post-graduate degree at Rangamati Government College.
After a long 2-hour journey on the bus, I went down to the village road of point. Terrible disease in the sky. It's getting hot and it's about 2pm. I was very thirsty. I saw a passenger camping beside it. I sat there. I could see that there was a water table next to the camp. The jar filled with water. A clean glass too. I went ahead and drank water. Then I found absolute inner peace. There is no house here, but there is a water supply system. This is a very good initiative. Then an old man came. Asked him Why is water kept in the Rijhang ( water table)? He said it was a very ancient social practice of the Marma community. I love hearing about that tradition.
Marma (a tribal community of Bangladesh) has been living in the Chittagong Hill Tracts since the Arakan period. They lived in the Chittagong Hill Tracts for about five hundred years. Marma likes to stay in the mountains for geographical reasons. One village is settled on this hill and another on another hill. Since there are no settlements in the middle of going from one hill to another, from one village to another, so that the traveler can drink water if thirsty, so the system of keeping water in Rijhang. Also, if an unknown guest is thirsty, he can drinks water. The real thing, the Marma community arranged for the beneficiaries to keep water to help the thirst of others.
But I have one thing to worry about. If a person feels badly mixed with something in the jar, then it will be worse if he drinks water.
It is good to think that even in the modern age, Marma is living with simple faith. Like the environment of the forest, they are living a quiet, simple and easy life. I am also a Marma community.
